While most people think of faceted deep red gemstones when they hear the word “garnet,” it’s really a catchall term for several different types of minerals. Some can be that familiar wine red, while others may be brown or even bright green. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Members of this group of stones have been used since the Bronze age for tools, adornment, and their magical properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
About Garnet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Garnets are silicate minerals, with colors that vary depending on the inclusion of other elements. All of them have a Mohs scale hardness of 6.5-7.5, hence their use as abrasive material. <\/p>\n\n\n

There are multiple different subtypes of this stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pyrope<\/strong> is a magnesium aluminum silicate, with colors ranging from pink to nearly black.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Almandite, or almandine<\/strong>, contains iron and magnesium. Its colors range from dark shades of orange-red to reddish purple.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Spessartine<\/strong> is a manganese aluminum silicate, and may be any shade ranging from yellow to red.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Grossular<\/strong> garnets are calcium aluminum silicates. Hessionite<\/strong> stones are a red to brownish orange subtype, while tsavorites<\/strong> are bright green due to the presence of vanadium or chromium.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Uvarovite<\/strong> is a calcium chromium silicate. Like tsavorite, it’s bright green.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Andradite<\/strong> covers three separate varieties, including black melanite<\/strong>, green demantoid<\/strong>, and yellow topazolite<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
