Earth Element Crystals & Stones

While all crystals are connected to the element of Earth by their very nature, they’re also tied to the other elements by their colors, formation, and properties.

Some crystals are associated more strongly with the Earth than others. These stones can be used to help foster a stronger connection to this element, bring the properties of growth and stability into meditations and spellwork, and serve as a representation of Earth on altars.

Here are some of the best crystals and stones for connecting to and working with the element of earth:

1. Black onyx

Black onyx is a very strong Earth element stone. It’s dark in color, as stones associated with Earth tend to be, associated with the root chakra, and has a wonderful ability to ground energy.

It’s also useful for energetic protection and repelling negativity. Wear it as jewelry or carry it as a pocket stone when you’re in need of a stabilizing and grounding influence, or use it as a meditation stone or during ritual work to connect to the element of Earth.

2. Black tourmaline

Some sources connect black tourmaline to the element of Water, but the majority consider it an Earth stone through and through. Like black onyx, it’s dark in color and has a very grounding energy.

This stone is also able to draw off negative energy and provide energetic protection. Use several rough or tumbled black tourmalines to form a circle of protection in an area, or wear or carry it any time you feel in need of a stable, grounding influence.

3. Clear quartz

Clear quartz is a master crystal. It’s considered the most versatile of stones, and can be programmed with any intention. On many altars that use physical representations of the elements, it serves as a stand-in for Earth.

Use it in combination with a shell or cup of water for Water, incense or feathers for Air, and a candle for Fire.

4. Halite

Halite is a form of rock salt, the natural form of sodium chloride. Magically, salt is associated with the Earth element — in some traditions, on some altars, it stands as a representation of it. It’s said to calm the nerves and provide a feeling of happiness, serenity, and security.

This stone is also cleansing, removing negative energy from the aura and any space in which it is placed. Since halite is soluble in water, it shouldn’t be worn as jewelry or carried in a pocket.

Use it as a meditation aid or during ritual work, and keep it in a safe, dry place when not in use.

5. Hematite

Hematite is sometimes associated with Fire, but is a very strong Earth crystal. It has a mysterious dark, silvery color, powerful grounding energy, and is strongly tied to the circulatory system and physical self.

It’s a stabilizing stone that helps to calm, heal, and cleanse the body. It’s an ore of iron, which is also tied to Earth. Wear it as jewelry, carry it in a pocket, or meditate with it to strengthen your connection to Earth energy.

As a note of caution, beware of magnetic hematite. This is man-made.

6. Jet

Jet functions similarly to black onyx and tourmaline. It’s associated with the element of Earth, the root chakra, and the Underworld.

It’s protective, repels negativity, and is particularly helpful while journeying through the other realms.

Interestingly, jet isn’t a true mineral — it’s a mineraloid, derived from ancient wood placed under extreme pressure.

Wear jet as jewelry or carry it in a pocket for protection against negative energy and people, and to strengthen your connection to the Earth.

7. Moss agate

Moss agate is a translucent to opaque variety of agate that features green, mosslike structures within the stone. It’s frequently used to connect to nature, plants, and the element of Earth.

Some green witches keep specimens near their potted plants or in their gardens, to help them flourish. You can also wear or carry this stone for a constant connection to the Earth element.

8. Petrified wood

Petrified wood illustrated the very long life cycles of the element of Earth. The minerals begin as soil, are taken up and made part of a tree, and then, when the tree falls, the wood becomes a stone as mineral-rich waters infiltrate the spongy, dead plant tissue.

It’s strongly associated with stability (particularly the ability to remain stable in the midst of a transformation), growth, prosperity, and grounding.

Meditate with or carry this stone when you’re going through a period of upheaval in your life, in order to call upon the Earth’s stability.

9. Prehnite

Prehnite, like moss agate, is one of the green Earth element stones. It has a very calming energy, and can even help create peace in a disturbed environment. This stone also combines well with other Earth crystals.

Wear it as jewelry, carry it in a pocket, or place a large specimen in a crystal grid.

10. Smoky quartz

Smoky quartz is very similar to clear quartz, in that it’s versatile and programmable, but its dark brown, gray, or even black color give it stronger Earth properties.

It’s a very grounding stone which takes negative energy in and transforms it to positive, mirroring the way that the soil takes in decaying matter and turns it into nutrients.

Wear or carry smoky quartz when you’re going through a rough patch, and let it help you cope with the negative energy you come into contact with.

11. Tree agate

Tree agate is similar to moss agate, but its green swirls resemble the branching patterns of trees rather than clumps of moss.

It’s other properties are similar, too. This stone helps foster a connection to plants, trees, nature, and Earth.

It’s often used to aid with Ogham divination and magic that deals heavily with trees and nature spirits. Like moss agate, you can wear or carry this for a constant connection to Earth, or place specimens in your garden or potted plants to help them grow.
