Crown Chakra Healing: Opening, Blockage, Signs & Symptoms

Your body is more than just your skin, bones, muscles, and organs. You’re also host to an energy body, which, while invisible, affects you on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level.

This energy body contains several focal points, which are called chakras in Hindu Tantra.

Each of these corresponds to a different area of the body, as well as facets of the emotions and spirit. The crown chakra, Sahasrara, is the most spiritually oriented of these.

About the Crown Chakra

The name Sahasrara translates to “thousand petaled.” This refers to its description as a lotus flower with a thousand petals, each of a different color.

It’s located at the crown of the head, and is often depicted as white, clear, or bright violet. Its associated mantra is “Aum.”

This is the chakra that allows the energy body to connect to the divine and higher intelligence. It’s associated with spirituality.

If it becomes blocked, then the life force is kept from flowing upward, and this connection to the spirit realm is lost.

Blocked Crown Chakra Signs & Symptoms

Sahasrara can be blocked by feelings of disconnection, repressed emotions, and fear — especially the fear of change. This can result in a variety of physical and emotional symptoms.

Emotionally, you may experience:

  • A lack of faith.
  • A strong desire for a guru or leader to guide you.
  • Greed.
  • Indecisiveness.
  • Egotism.
  • Self-destructive behaviors.
  • A need to dominate others.

Physically, this blockage may cause:

  • Headaches.
  • Neck pain.
  • Ear pain.
  • Fatigue.
  • Brain fog.
  • Hair loss.

Due to its location, most of the physical symptoms of a blocked crown chakra are related to the head area. Some of these can also indicate serious medical conditions, so it’s always good to visit the doctor to rule these out.

Most techniques for unblocking the crown chakra can be used alongside conventional medical treatment.

Crown Chakra Opening Signs & Symptoms

A blocked crown chakra causes specific symptoms, so it stands to reason that an opening one does too.

If you’re used to constant symptoms of headaches, neck pain, and fatigue with no easily explainable cause, you might be amazed at the shift you experience once this chakra opens.

Signs of an opening crown chakra include:

  • Changes in sleep patterns.
  • Unusually vivid or memorable dreams.
  • More intense emotions.
  • A change in perspective.
  • A change in beliefs.
  • A feeling of unity with others.
  • A deeper sense of compassion.
  • A sense of connection to or communication with the divine.

Physically, you might experience:

  • A different kind of headache.
  • Slight dizziness.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Itching or tingling at the crown of the head.
  • A bright flash of light.

Methods to Heal, Balance & Open the Crown Chakra

There are many ways to correct the chakras and allow energy to flow through them. Some may work better for you than others, but you don’t have to confine yourself to a single method.

Experiment with each one, try combining two or more, and see what resonates the most deeply to you.

Meditation and Visualization

Sit or lay comfortably. Slowly scan your body for areas of tension or discomfort. Consciously attempt to relax these areas as you inhale deeply for a count of four, hold your breath for a count of two, then exhale for a count of seven.

Repeat this three times. When your physical body is sufficiently relaxed, picture your crown chakra as a thousand petaled lotus of many colors. See it rotating slowly, bathed in golden light. Observe it for a moment — how fast is it spinning? In which direction does it turn?

Are the colors bright and lively, or dull and washed out?

Now, imagine this flower filling with a bright violet glow. Draw energy up through the rest of the chakras to your crown, until you feel ready to stop. Open your eyes and shake your arms and legs to bring yourself back into your physical self.

Sound Healing

Vibration is energy, and sound is vibration. Research has shown that specific vibrations can impact our emotional states — from terror-inducing subsonic frequencies, to relaxing ones.

Even a cat’s purr has been shown to speed the healing of injuries. The best one for the crown chakra is 963 HZ. Listen to music tuned to this frequency, or use a bowl, chime, or tuning fork designed to vibrate at it.

Crystals and Stones

Crystals and stones have their own subtle vibrational energy, and some are ideally suited for healing, balancing, and opening the crown chakra.

Most of the appropriate stones are white, clear, or purple in color. Crystals like amethyst and selenite are potent energy cleansers, and are associated with spiritual connection.

One of the best ways to use crystals for chakra healing is to wear them adjacent to the energy center they correspond to. This can be tough to do with Sahasrara.

If you’re lucky, you may be able to find earrings, hat pins, or hair clips with crown chakra stones. Otherwise, consider placing them near the head during meditation, sound bathing, or energy work.

Herbs and Foods

The chakras aren’t really part of the physical body, but the physical and energy bodies are inextricably intertwined. What you eat determines not only your physical health, but your energy as well.

Cleansing herbs, like lavender and sage, are perfect for this area. They can dispel negativity, as well as enhance mental clarity, focus, and relaxation.

Purple foods also resonate with Sahasrara. Consider adding more dark berries, plums, and grapes to the diet.

Aromatherapy

Every time you smell something, minute particles of it are taken up by your olfactory receptors.

Aromatherapy uses concentrated plant essences — essential oils — in order to introduce tiny quantities of powerful plant medicine into the body via the nose. Certain essences are healing and balancing to Sahasrara.

Frankincense and sandalwood are both used for establishing sacred and meditative spaces, so it makes sense that they help open the crown chakra as well.

Lavender’s calming, cleansing scent is pretty much universal for all of the energy centers. Wear these oils in aromatherapy jewelry, or (if you don’t live with pets or small children) use them in a diffuser.

Color

Each chakra has a color or two, and resonates with the presence of these hues. For the crown chakra, that means purple and white.

You can wear it or decorate with it, it doesn’t make a difference — as long as you surround yourself with the energy of these colors, your crown chakra will benefit.

Exercise

Exercise is a great way to combat some of the symptoms of a blocked crown chakra, including fatigue.

Inverted yoga asanas, like Salamba Sirsasana and Salamba Sarvangasana, encourage blood flow to the head and stimulate the crown area.

Energy Work

Reiki and other energy healing techniques can open Sahasrara. If you aren’t well versed in these modalities, you may wish to ask a friend who is for help.

Otherwise, you can hire an energy worker to channel healing power into your crown chakra and any other energy centers in need of attention.

Your crown chakra is what lets your life force connect to the universe. It reminds you that you aren’t alone, and there is an entire universe of divine power and other living beings with hopes, dreams, and needs as deep and complex as your own.

Healing, balancing, and opening this energy center can dispel feelings of isolation and connect you to higher intelligence.
